ELLENSBURG, Wash.-- The Kittitas County Sheriff's Office says construction on the new county jail is going great.
The new 118 bed facility is being built in the courtyard of the current County Courthouse in Ellensburg.
It will help save money usually spent on sending inmates to other facilities, money that can now be put back into the Sheriff's Department.
And good news for tax payers, the project didn't require any new taxes.
"There's no new taxes in this. This is using existing revenues that are generated through law and justice taxes that were passed a long time ago," said Kittitas County Sheriff Gene Dana. "The revenues from those existing funds and incoming revenues will pay for the facility."
The jail should be finished by July 2012, and when it reaches capacity it'll need 12 new corrections officers to staff it.
