Tri-Cities Play It Forward Group Helping Haitian Kids Through Soccer

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Around the world, soccer is a game that unites people. In Fond-Perisien, Haiti, it is doing even more than that.

"Soccer is huge in Haiti and you can just see it in their face, just the joy and the hope," said Char Frank, who lives in the Tri-Cities and volunteers for a group helping children in Haiti called Play It Forward.

But, soccer equipment is hard to find in Haiti.

In the Tri-Cities, Frank and Play It Forward provide the equipment and soccer balls needed to play. But, that is just a part of what Play It Forward provides for Haitian Kids.

"The kids have to be in school," said Frank. "They have to be getting above average grades. Some of these kids, it's the only meal they get."

Char has now been to Haiti twice, helping the 60 kids that Play It Forward Sponsors. She says the experience couldn't be more rewarding.

"They have big dreams," she says. "They want to play professional and some of them are really good."

In Fond-Perisien, soccer is the catalyst that is allowing kids to pursue even greater goals than putting a ball in a net, like an education and a better life for their family.

In the Tri-Cities, people like Char Frank and Play It Forward are more than happy to help make that happen.
