YAKIMA,Wash- Thousands of people turned out today in Yakima for the fourth annual "Fiesta de Salud" health fair. The event offered 500 free helmets and helmet fittings for children and free blood pressure screenings. They also offered counseling on preventative medicine like diabetes and STD awareness. The event was open to everyone but the target audience was Latinos.
"What they don't have is the medical coverage, the money, the providers, there are other cultural barriers and language barriers but they are more aware than before", says doctor Lily Gonzalez of Memorial Hospital.
As for the fiesta part, there was also live music, dancing, and food. The event is sponsored by Memorial Hospital, but health care organizations from as far away as Seattle participated.
