YAKIMA, Wash- With Yakima County's unemployment hovering at 10 percent, local food banks are struggling to feed those in need. Many have to get creative when it comes to getting food donated. Saturday Northwest Harvest hosted berry gleaning events where volunteers picked blueberries donated by a local grower.
"So combining the produce that can't be marketed to have folks come out and get it to those that are hungry seems like a great fit", says Jamie Willard, Gleaning coordinator.
In the last three years Northwest Harvest has seen a 30 percent jump in people visiting food banks. If you are interested in donating your leftover produce or helping pick fruit, contact Northwest Harvest.
