RICHLAND, Wash. -- After nearly two years of leasing space at Prosser's Princess Theatre for Sunday services, Richland-based Bethel Church has purchased land in the historic Lower Valley town to build a new church there.
Bethel got a bargain for the land on Wine Country Road, after the landowners took $150,000 off the price when they heard a church wanted to buy it.
Bethel's pastors are brainstorming all the ways they can use their 25 acres. At first they thought about selling sections of it. But they now envision the land being used for community gardens, sports fields, walking paths and maybe an amphitheater.
"To have an opportunity to be able to expand into another community like that is pretty exciting for me," Executive Pastor George Bache said. "I'm looking forward to see what God will do as we are able to move into that community in a more permanent way."
Bethel has a lease with the Princess Theatre until August of next year. If the new church isn't ready by then, Bethel is prepared to renew its lease and continue services there.
