Options limited for homeless in Yakima Valley

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.--  Last week, we told you about some homeowners fed up with homeless people urinating or defecating on their property. Many people responded, asking what other options the homeless have in Yakima.

The Homeless Network of Yakima County says there are ways for the homeless to get some specific services. They can get healthcare services at places like Yakima Neighborhood Health and take showers at Triumph Treatment Center. However, there are no options for many when it comes to sleeping or passing the time during times of normal weather.

"There are no day shelters available that I'm aware of, the community needs to come together and develop a safe place for anybody, not just homeless people," Outreach Coordinator Annette Rodriguez says.

There are still about 40 agencies in the homeless network of Yakima County that can offer some help. While options for the homeless in the valley are limited, that doesn't mean the homeless have license to do whatever they want. Police say they can still be arrested for breaking laws such as trespassing and indecent exposure.
