KENNEWICK, WA- The Benton and Franklin Public Utility Districts hold a joint public hearing Tuesday on a proposed change to a voter-approved initiative.
The Washington State Legislature wants to revise Initiative 937 that requires utilities to include wind power and other eligible renewable energy resources.
Benton PUD spokeswoman Karen Miller says the revision would clarify that utilities wouldn't have to buy that renewable energy if they are already meeting demands with renewable resources.
"If we don't need the energy, if we have enough power, it would require us still to replace renewable hydro power we use with a different renewable such as wind."
The public hearing starts at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Benton PUD Auditorium at West 10th Avenue and Highway 395 in Kennewick.
