Teacher out-of-pocket spending is high

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Teacher out-of-pocket spending is high. Teachers mentor your children and help them learn. They also go out of their way to make sure classrooms are decorated and ready for students to be taught in.

We were told that the amount of money ranges from what teachers spend, depending on the classroom and how much materials they had to start off with. Teachers can spend anywhere from a couple hundred dollars, to a few thousand. New teachers generally spend the most.

Principal Dale Kern of Westgate Elementary says "I am always surprised with what teachers will do for kids. They are always willing to step out, and whether it's spend their time or their money. It's just humbling and amazing for me to watch every year."

When asked how much money was spent on classroom preparation, Mary Panther, a former teacher says "you probably don't want to know. In fact my husband and I looked at it and kind of smiled and said we feel blessed because we have it to spend. I probably spent over $1,000 last year."

Some teachers say they spend a lot of their personal time and money making sure students have everything they need. If some students do not have school supplies, there are teachers that always have extra binders, notebooks and other materials they give to children.
