City of Kennewick looking at new way to employ

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- The City of Kennewick is looking at a new way to make sure its future employees can legally work in the United States.

E-Verify is an internet-based program that is quicker, more affordable and a more efficient way of processing I-9 forms.  The free federal program ensures workers are authorized to work in the U.S.  However, it has brought up controversy surrounding immigration, but city leaders say it's really just a guidance tool.

"It doesn't determine citizenship.  It doesn't even determine immigration status.  It simply is a tool that you use after you've hired someone. You're required to fill out an I-9 form, and it's that info from that form that you submit to E-Verify," says Lisa Beaton, presented E-Verify to council.

The next step is to send the proposal to a city council sub-committee to look at examples from other jurisdictions.  Once a more thorough report is compiled, it will be brought back to city council.
