School zone flashing beacons starting again with school year
YAKIMA, Wash. -- You may see more flashing lights in school zones this year in Yakima. If you speed through, you may see flashing lights in your rear view mirror. Twenty miles per hour is the state speed limit in the zones when the lights flash.
The Yakima Traffic Division says watching out for children is the important factor in all this."They should probably take a little extra caution, slow down or give them a little extra room because just kids being kids sometimes they end up in the street when they didn't expect to," said Joe Rosenlund, City of Yakima Traffic and Street Manager.
AAA has a few tips on what to remember. Eliminate distractions in the car. Stay alert and be aware of what's around you. Watch for bikes in the streets. Stay far enough behind buses and don't pass them when they are stopped. Also plan ahead so you're not in a rush later.
