YAKIMA, Wash- It's official, Yakima's new city manager starts work on Tuesday. For about a year the city has put off some big decisions waiting for a new city manager. Don Cooper has been a city manager in Port St. Lucie Florida and beat out two other finalists for this job.
The city manager is the city council's only employee, the one person they hire themselves. That person is in turn responsible for all of the city's department heads. Today city council members today and they said one of the first things they want Cooper to focus on is city staffing.
"Filling the department head vacancies we've got interim police chief, interim fire chief, interim community economic development director, so that's a big task right there, along with the budget and helping develop that process into the fall", says Mayor Micah Cawley.
Cooper is on a year-to-year contract for $155,000. He's scheduled to take his oath of office at Tuesday's city council meeting.
