GOLDENDALE, Wash.-- A wildfire near Satus Pass has claimed 9 homes and 10 out-buildings, but luckily no lives. So far, 5,300 acres have been scorched since the fire started on Wednesday.
KNDU/KNDO had the chance to see the blaze from the air on Thursday. We surveyed the sheer size of the fire, smoke blanketing the area all around it. And the perimeter of the fire circling around the forest and working its way out.
About 300 people have been evacuated so far. More than 400 firefighters are battling the flames with the help of planes and helicopters dropping water.
Also Thursday, Governor Chris Gregoire met with some evacuees at the Klickitat County fairgrounds, where the Red Cross has set up an evacuation center under the grandstands. FEMA authorized the use of federal funds to help the state fight this fire.
There will be an informational meeting Friday night at 7:00pm at the Goldendale High School for anyone who wants to learn more about the fire.
The high school football game that was scheduled for Friday night in Goldendale has been moved. River View v. Goldendale will now be held at Art Fiker Stadium in Prosser. Game starts at 7:00 pm.
