KENNEWICK, Wash. -- Many of those battling the flames right now, are from our local area, and most of them are volunteers.
Captain Devin Helland with Benton County District One, said his department sent seven people to Goldendale. He says six of them are volunteers and residents.
Helland says, they're not the only heroes, On Wednesday, Benton County Districts 1,2, 4 all sent volunteers and trucks. Walla Walla Districts 4 and 5 also went. Franklin County District 3 sent out people too.
By Thursday, when the flames continued to spread, Helland says Prosser and Benton County District 1 sent even more people.
"Usually that's a 72 hour operational period, sometimes they'll ask them to stay on longer. Sometimes they get kicked earlier, but there's no chance they'll be coming home early," says Helland.
Captain Helland says because they are only a couple hours from the fire, crews are at least able to swap people out as needed. More than two dozen fire fighters working right now are from Benton, Franklin and Walla Walla counties.
