Gangs affecting property value

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK, Wash.-- Gangs affecting property value. Earlier this week we talked about the increase of gangs in the area. On Friday we looked at how increased crime areas affect property value. What we found today is a lot of surrounding communities have trouble with gangs having an influence on neighborhood values.

Kennewick Police Sgt. Ken Lattin says "we don't have to look too far to see that we have some neighborhoods that are in communities that are not far away that gangs have really dominated those areas. People don't want to live there because of that."

What's being done is Kennewick Police are re-allocating patrol officers and putting them on criminal apprehension teams to keep streets safer.

Real estate agents say the best way to make sure a neighborhood is safe is to check in with police before you buy a home.

Windermere Realtor Cari McGee says "whenever I have anybody looking for a house regardless of the neighborhood or area I always tell them to go ahead and give the police department a call and find out what kind of calls come in from that area."
