YAKIMA, Wash.-- City Manager Don Cooper says he hopes to have a new police chief in the job by January.
The previous chief stepped down last year after dealing with several issues including lawsuits filed against him. Cooper says they were originally planning to have the chief in by early spring. He says it's taking so long because there are a lot of requirements.
"It's very difficult because not only does he have to work well with the city manager, but the city council, and police department, and the community and... It's a very tough job," says Cooper.
The city has a private firm that's currently searching for police chief candidates. Cooper says he hopes to have the field narrowed down to about three to five people before the end of the year.
