Americans take pre-season opener

EVERETT, WA – Marcus Messier, with a two-point night, was one of five different skaters to score, guiding the Tri-City Americans (1-0) past the host Everett Silvertips (0-1) 5-2 in the Day 1 finale of the Everett Silvertips Pre-Season Classic, presented by Holiday Inn – Downtown Everett.

It was a bitter sweet first period of the season for the Americans, as they outchanced the ‘Tips 16 to 1 through the first 20 minutes.  However, none of them found their way past Everett starter, Luke Siemens, as the contest remained scoreless going into the first intermission.

Finally, at the 7:22 mark of the second period, Justin Feser got things started.  While playing shorthanded, Zachary Yuen managed to break out Feser, who beat Siemens for his first goal of the pre-season.  The lead lasted just over a minute, however, as Everett's Josh Birkholz answered to knot the game at 1 headed into the final period of play.

The third period was a different story, though, as the Americans exploded for four goals in a 10-minute span, breaking the contest open.  The first, just 4:44 into the third period, came off the stick of defenseman Michal Plutnar.  Six minutes later, and on the power play, fellow blueliner Mitch Topping picked up his first goal of the exhibition.  Messier and Lucas Nickles also scored within two minutes of one another, as Tri-City took a 5-1 lead with 4:36 remaining in regulation.

Jesse Mychan added a late tally for the ‘Tips, but it was all they could muster down the stretch as Tri-City cruised to the win.

Ty Rimmer started in net for Tri-City, playing the first 30:51, before giving way to rookie Eric Comrie.  Each allowed one goal in half a game's work.  Tri-City finished the night 1-for-8 on the power play and was a perfect 6-of-6 on the penalty kill.

Next up, the Americans will prepare to take on the Portland Winterhawks (0-0) tomorrow, Saturday, September 3 in Day 2 of the pre-season tournament at Comcast Arena.  Game time is 3:00 p.m.
