KENNEWICK, WA- A man from the Tri-Cities will spend the next five years in prison for giving heroin to people who died after taking the drug.

Brian Burt pleaded guilty to homicide by controlled substance.

Prosecutors say Burt knew people were dying from his high-powered heroin, yet continued to deal the drug to pay for his habit.

In court before sentencing, Diedre Hermsen, mother of one of the victims, told Burt her son's death changed her life forever.

"When not lost in addiction, Liam was a remarkable artist, a gifted writer, a loving son and brother. Our family deeply understands what it means to lose a son and we do not want another family to suffer that loss."

In all, prosecutors say they believe Burt is responsible for the deaths of five people.
