WAPATO, Wash. (AP) - An 11-year-old boy running to catch a school bus was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver Friday morning in Wapato.
Washington State Patrol Lt. Terry Liebrecht says Vernon McFarland, known to his friends as Joey was waiting at the bus stop when he thought he was briefly summoned home by his father. Joey was hit by a pickup truck when he re-crossed the road. The boy's father and several other children at the bus stop saw it happen.
The driver briefly stopped and checked the damage to his truck, then drove off.
Police are looking for a small silver or gray pickup similar to a Chevrolet S-10, with a broken headlight and grill damage.
