Backhoe shovels first dirt for Badger Mountain South

RICHLAND,WA- The city of Richland Thursday broke ground on a new housing development planners say will be close to everything, and close to perfect.

Badger Mountain South will spread across 1,500 acres along Interstate 82 at the Dallas Road Interchange.

The 20-year master plan comprises 5,000 single family homes, apartments and townhouses of various price ranges.

Developers say they've designed the community for what they call a "five-minute lifestyle," with retail businesses, parks, and schools all within walking distance.

Over the next several months, construction crews will lay water, sewer, and electrical lines. The first 300 homes are scheduled to be move-in-ready by 2012.
