Just how far has Ryan Leaf come since his bust in the NFL, and later, his bust for drugs in Texas? He's come a long, long way.

Speaking on the Jim Rome Show on Wednesday, the Washington State legend was candid about his rise and fall, and admitted two notable things: the game against Kansas City was the "root of all evil" and he hopes no one unseats him as the biggest bust in the NFL.

After winning the first two regular season games of his career, Leaf explained he had a hard time dealing with the Chargers' awful loss to Kansas City – or more to the point: his awful performance against the Chiefs. Leaf completed 1-of-15 passes for four yards that day, and he fumbled three times.

"All I saw was the criticism and how awful I was," he told Rome. "That, for me, was tough to handle. I never had to deal with loss."

Leaf, now several months removed from drug charges and surgery to remove a benign tumor from his brain stem, said he doesn't wish for someone to dethrone him from the "biggest NFL bust" status.

"I don't hope for a guy to get drafted early and be a bust; I like to see guys succeed," said Leaf.

Leaf is under contract to write three autobiographical books about his life experiences, from his successful days at Washington State, to his stint in the NFL and what has happened since then. His first book, "596 Switch" is finished. He will be in Pullman Oct. 13-15 – Homecoming Week – to promote it and sign autographs.
