YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima Police Department's Gang Unit is getting another officer.
Sergeant Erik Hildebrand says the department is in the process of transferring an officer into the unit. The new officer should start in January. Currently the Gang Unit only has 3 officers and a sergeant to concentrate on Yakima's gang problem, but Sgt. Hildebrand says a fourth officer will be a big help.
"It kind of limits us when we have just 4 officers compared to 5, 6, or 7 as far as doing the follow-up on the gang investigations, doing the gang intelligence, the database," said Sgt. Hildebrand.
When the unit was established 7 years ago they had 7 police officers working it, but with budget cuts they've been cut back over the years.
Now with another body on the streets, Hildebrand says they'll be better able to follow-up on tips and gang related reports.
