Union Gospel Mission wants you to "Scan Away Hunger"
YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Union Gospel Mission started its "Scan Away Hunger" campaign this month.
Customers at a number of local stores can pick up a coupon and add an extra $1.97 to their purchase. The money goes to preparing food boxes for people in need.
The executive director of the mission says a few years ago they were giving out 30 food boxes a day, now it's now up to about 60. He says little donations like these coupons go a long way.
"You know, it says a lot to people that are struggling that there are... That there are people in this community that really care about what's happening and they want a part in helping," says Union Gospel Mission Executive Director Rick Phillips.
You can find these coupons through the end of the year at any of Wray's Thriftways, the Selah Red Apple Market, the Toppenish and Wapato marketplace, Rosauers, and the Olde Lighthouse Shoppe. Phillips says he wishes more stores would participate.
