Budget shortfall may hold up Gang Free Initiative progress
YAKIMA, Wash.-- Yakima might have to wait longer to get a director for its Gang Free Initiative. The program is designed to help fight the growing gang problem.
The city council is still working on the budget, and trying to overcome a million dollar shortfall this year. Yakima's mayor says ideas and plans are in place and ready to go on the initiative, they just need to find the money.
"It's gonna be our approach: do we have the money for an executive director and… is it important to the council that we put that someone in place to work that program and process further," says Mayor Micah Cawley.
A few weeks ago Councilman Dave Edler expressed concern about funding on the initiative. The city council meets tomorrow at six PM for its business meeting.
