YAKIMA ,Wash.-- A program that gives students better access to after-school programs is being celebrated cross the nation this month.
Locally, the Yakima Valley branch of the "Lights on Afterschool" program is honoring Yakima County Sheriff Ken Irwin.
The group wants to honor Sheriff Irwin for his efforts and support of after-school programs around the county.
"There are so many people that are working behind the scenes and on the front lines day after day, and to receive this award from them.... I'm very honored," said Sheriff Irwin.
Organizers say programs in the area provide a safe place for young people during unsupervised hours, which helps to improve grades, and keeps them from getting into trouble.\ Yakima's local celebration is Monday, October 24th, at 4:30pm at the Yakima Convention Center.
