Former cop changes plea hours before trial starts

Posted: Updated:

KENNEWICK,WA-A Former Portland, Oregon police officer has pleaded guilty to seven felony sex offenses.

Ryan Graichen changed his plea just hours before attorneys were to begin picking jurors for his trial at the Benton County Justice Center.

Kennewick police arrested Graichen last December after teenagers identified him as the man who approached them in Columbia Park and offered them money, alcohol, and marijuana if they would go to his house and be filmed while he masturbated.

Deputy prosecutor Anita Petra says she's glad the victims won't have to testify, in particular one teenage girl.

"She had agreed to sexual contact with Mr. Graichen, and this would have been an embarrassing case for her."

At the conclusion of the hearing, Graichen apologized to the Kennewick police detectives who arrested him for blemishing the law enforcement profession.

Graichen, 35, worked for the Portland Police Department for about nine years.  He faces up to ten years in prison when he's sentenced next month.

Graichen will also have to file as a sex offender.
