Hundreds pay their final respects to Ron Bonlender

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Hundreds of people from around the Yakima Valley paid their final respects to former City Council member and activist Ron Bonlender.

Upwards of a thousand people came out of the funeral service at Saint Joseph Church Saturday afternoon.

A church where Ron Bonlender was a member for many years.

Friends, family, and people from around the community came by to pay their respects.

Yakima's Mayor, police and fire chiefs, and many other city officials who worked with Bonlender over the years were present at the service.

His children say the outpouring of support goes to show how many lives Ron Bonlender touched.

"Our family is really touched by this level of support and really kind of blown away. He would be truly honored to know that so many people recognize that," said Brian Bonlender.

Friends and guests were invited to a reception at the 4th Street Theatre following the service.

The Bonlender family had requested that people donate to the Committee for Downtown Yakima, instead of giving flowers, and we're told that people did just that.
