SPOKANE, Wash. -

Christina Santorsola may be just 5-foot-2, but she plays much bigger than that – both on the volleyball court and in the classroom.

"She's very volleyball smart," said her coach at Gonzaga Prep Jeff Christopher. "She's not just a physical player, she's 5-foot-2, but on the volleyball court she plays like she's 6-foot-2. She knows when to hit the ball hard and when to place a shot."

Christina at 5-foot-2 plays in a sport filled with giants," added assistant coach Scott Davis. "She's a perfect example of how it's not how big you are, it's how good you are, and she's an amazing player and has an incredible volleyball IQ as well."

Athletically, her teammates say she is mentally tough as well and definitely a team leader.

"I'm talkative, definitely, on the court," said the senior outside hitter about herself. "I lead by example, which is what I really focus on when I'm playing. If I can do something well then the other girls can catch on to it and do what I do, and then we grow and become better."

Santorsola's never-be-denied attitude extends to the classroom as well where she maintains a 3.8 GPA. Math and science are her favorite subjects.

"At some points my best isn't what I think it should be, but at that moment it's all I can possibly do," she said of her efforts. "I've just been pushing myself to do that."
