VFW rebuilds after fire and celebrates Veteran's Day in new building
YAKIMA, Wash- The Yakima Veterans of Foreign Wars building was ravaged by a fire in June 2010 destroying everything inside. But on this Veterans Day, they were able to honor their colleagues in a brand new building.
The fire completely destroyed the inside of the building including irreplaceable war relics. That loss was devastating to the VFW, however they say every cloud has a silver lining.
"It was definitely a blow to lose such things as the memorabilia. I'm actually much happier with the new club it's given us the opportunity to do a lot of updates and remodeling that we wouldn't have a chance to do otherwise", says Post Commander Dan Hillman.
The VFW is a service organization, giving help to vets and their families but they also operate a club for their members. You can see there's a pool hall a bar and a dance floor.
The upgrades were paid for by insurance and donors. The grand opening isn't until December 3, but they couldn't pass up an opportunity to spend veteran's day in their home.
