Richland, WA - Gay marriage advocates gathered in Richland Monday night to show their support for a new, statewide coalition that hopes to make Washington the 7th state to allow gay marriages.
The meeting was one of several around the state for the Washington United for Marriage coalition. The grassroots effort is asking supporters to write letters to their local lawmakers, to encourage them to take Washington's domestic partnership rights to a new level of equality.
"People universally understand that marriage is this loving committed relationship that, if I tell you 'I'm married', you get it. You understand what my relationship is to this other person that I'm married to. And domestic partnership just doesn't do that," said Amy White with Pride Foundation.
Monday's meeting was held at Shalom United Church of Christ in Richland. Similar meetings were held in the Seattle-Tacoma area last week. Another meeting will be held Tuesday night in Spokane.
