Several Spokane-area basketball teams are in action on Friday as part of the inaugural Fitz Tip Off Basketball tournament.
The tournament is in honor of former Gonzaga coach Dan Fitzgerald who passed away last year at the age of 67. The event began Thursday night with a banquet and 3-point shooting contest at Northern Quest Resort and Casino in Airway Heights.
"Fitz just believed so much in young people and to have these eight teams competing and having a 3-point shooting contest, Fitz is looking down on us and enjoying it immensely," said Cajer Neely, a tournament volunteer.
Teams competing in the tournament include Mead, Lewis & Clark, Shadle Park, Cheney, Richland, West Valley (Yakima), Camas and Kelso. All games are at Lewis & Clark High School.
Proceeds of the tournament benefit the Spokane Boys and Girls Club and a Fitz scholarship fund at Archbishop Mitty High in San Jose.
