YAKIMA, Wash.-- The DUI emphasis patrol on New Year's Eve was a big success for local law enforcement, but not in the way you might think.
According to the Yakima Police Department there were six DUI arrests Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Sgt. Shawn Boyle says that officers made a lot of stops, looking for drunk drivers but were happy to find many people using designated, sober drivers.
"They found a lot of impaired people inside cars but the majority of times, the drivers were not the ones that were impaired. Which is what we hope to see, that they make the responsible choice to find a sober person to drive their car," said Sgt. Boyle.
Extra law enforcement was also out on local highways.
According the Washington State Patrol, they had 10 DUI arrests in the upper valley, non coming from the lower valley.
Also, there were no accidents reported this New Year's Eve in the City of Yakima or on highways.
So for the most part, it seems like people had a fun, and safe new years.
