Pasco, Wash. - Pasco's City Council wants to help the police department crack down on gangs and street crimes.
On Tuesday night, the City Council gave the department the go-ahead to hire four new police officers. Those officers will replace four current officers on the force, who will be promoted to the department's new undercover street crimes unit.
"When we did the sales tax initiative, one of the things we promised was to work on the gang activity in our community. This undercover unit will be specifically targeted to gang and other street crimes that are out there that are occurring in our community," said Pasco Police Chief Robert Metzger.
Also on Tuesday night, the council approved a resolution endorsing a new regional emergency communications system. They're also urging the public safety agencies in Franklin County to implement the system by the end of this year.
