WSP says Yakima County snow accidents are relatively low
YAKIMA, Wash- The roads are treacherous around the state but drivers in our area seem to be handling them relatively well. Washington State Patrol says they're measuring accidents in the last 24 hours even though the snow in Yakima didn't start until about nine last night.
As of 3pm Wednesday Washington State Patrol had responded to 726 car accidents across Washington. But in Yakima County, they only responded to 45 in Sunnyside, and 25 in Yakima.
Lt. Terry Liebrecht of WSP says even though this is the first major winter weather of the season, it seems drivers in our area have gotten the message about safety in the snow.
"Drivers, at least in our county, have made the necessary adjustments, even if you have a vehicle that has four wheel drive, a four wheel drive vehicle will give you more traction but it doesn't help you stop", says Lt. Liebrecht .
Tri Cities on the other hand has seen over 150 accidents since midnight Wednesday and WSP says they expect that number to increase as people leave work.
The recommendations are the same as always, slow down, and increase your following distance.
