Attempted robbery leads to shooting

YAKIMA, Wash.-- If you were stuck in traffic along Nob Hill Boulevard and Sixth Avenue in Yakima Thursday afternoon it wasn't only the snow to blame.

Police flooded the area after several shots were fired in an attempted robbery at La Milpa Market on the 600 block of Nob Hill.
Yakima Police say 39-year-old David Vickers went into the market and pulled out a sawed-off shotgun, then tried to shoot the store owner.

Luckily, he missed. The owner then fought with Vickers who fired another shot. That one also missed.

The suspect ran from store and even tried to carjack at least two drivers to get away.

"The store owner gave chase to the guy so we had witnesses that helped us direct us to the right guys," said Sgt. Mike Pollard with the Yakima Police Dept.

Police were able to find the gun used in the robbery.

The store owner had a few minor injuries, but was okay.

Vickers has been booked into the Yakima County Jail and faces robbery and assault charges.

Police say they're very lucky no one was seriously injured.
