City possibly over budget for snow removal...already
YAKIMA, Wash- Three days of heavy snow in Yakima has possibly put the city over-budget for snow removal for the year. Early estimates from Joe Roselund, Streets and Traffic manager for the City of Yakima are $300-500 thousand just to get through the weekend.
In addition to the city plows handling main roads like Yakima Avenue, Tieton, and 40th since Wednesday, starting Thursday evening they've hired private contractors to plow residential streets. Friday night they'll work on doing more clean up downtown.
The problem is the snow removal budget for the entire year is just $400,000.
"My budget's already shot and we still have November, December at the end of the year. So the city will be using reserves to pay for snow removal,"says Rosenlund.
The city has made visible progress on many roads, but there are still residential areas, particularly in East Yakima that haven't been touched. The city says they will get to all areas, but it's likely going to take until Monday to plow 400 miles of streets.
