Salt and sand on roads can damage your car

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Salt and sand are often used to keep the roads clear, but they can actually damage your car.

Salt is very corrosive and can break down paints and finishes. It can also get into different cracks and crevices in your car and cause it to rust.

We talked with a local carwash and the say many of their customers wash their cars after long trips in the winter.

"Every time they come back over the pass they're washing their car... That's... You know, a good idea to get it off as soon as possible 'cause the longer it sets, the harder it is to get off and the more damage it's going to do," says Splash Express Carwash Manager Walt Hyde.

Hyde says keeping the underside of the car clean is important as well because it's harder to see the damage.
