RICHLAND, Wash. -- Police shut down part of Steptoe Street in Richland because of a natural gas leak Tuesday. It happened just after 12:00 PM.
According to a Cascade Gas spokesman, a contractor was digging up a pipe near Steptoe and Arrowhead Streets when a pipe belonging to the gas utility was struck.
Police say air monitoring showed no dangerous levels of gas.
The incident created some traffic for lunchtime drivers after police closed Steptoe Street between Gage and Tapteal to secure the area.
The leak was stopped around 2:00 PM Steptoe was reopened. Cascade Gas says 80 customers will be without gas until 9:00 PM Tuesday. Utility crews tell us one was person was evacuated during the incident.
