Olympia, Wash. - State legislators are considering a new bill that would require photos on state-issued public assistance benefit cards.
The measure is sponsored by Representative Troy Kelley of Tacoma. It's designed to reduce welfare fraud, and the black-market trading of EBT cards for cash.
The Electronic Benefit Transfer cards function like bank debit cards, and are loaded each month with the cash value of benefits for food purchases and other assistance.
The bill is scheduled for a hearing Tuesday in the Early Learning & Human Services Committee.
