Velasco apologizes, sentenced to 15 years

PASCO, WA- A man will serve 15 years in prison for murdering his sister.

Before sentencing today, Aaron Velasco, 29, apologized as his parents sat behind him.

"I'm here now to take responsibility for my actions, just the way it should be…and pay for my freedom for what I've done, and I leave my freedom in your hands, and God."

Pasco police arrested Velasco last June after he called 911. Officers discovered the body of his younger sister outside the family home. Police say Magdalena Velasco Garcia, 22, had been attacked with a machete.

Through a Spanish interpreter, Velasco's mother asked for a lesser sentence, saying she has lost two children, one in death, the other to prison.

In exchange for Velasco pleading guilty to second degree murder, the judge accepted the prosecutor's recommended 15-year sentence, three years less than the maximum.
