Children's book author speaks at Ridgeview Elementary
YAKIMA, Wash.-- An award-winning children's book author spoke to kids at Ridgeview Elementary in Yakima today.
Ben Mikaelsen is the author of several books including "Petey" and "Touching Spirit Bear". He talked to kids about bullying, tolerance, and respect, drawing from his childhood experiences growing up as a minority in South America. He hopes they will take his lessons to heart.
"If I've done my job that there is a palatable difference in the hallways in terms of how the kids treat each other. How they go about... you know... if a kid is being bullied on the bus that that stops today," says Mikaelsen.
Mikaelsen says he visits about 80 to 90 schools every year. He previously spoke to teachers at the Yakima Schools Foundation breakfast last spring.
