Police say they see more use of hookah

Posted: Updated:

Police say they see more use of hookah. A University of Michigan study found that there's been a major increase in the number of teens smoking tobacco by using hookah.

According to the Monitoring the Future study about 19% of students are using it. Researchers say it's more common for students in middle school and high school.

On Saturday we talked with local law enforcement who say the trends in Tri-Cities are much different. Cpl. Todd Dronen says "the hookah smoking device is something that we've seen recently more often than in times past. What we've seen in the past year or so is more of the 18-25 year old group."

The study shows men are more likely to smoke hookah than women. Local police say the most common substance calls they get concerning teens is alcohol at parties.
