Bateman Island clean-up day

Posted: Updated:

Bateman Island clean-up day. There's always a need for cleanup in every community. On Saturday more than 100 people helped make that happen.

Volunteers worked with the Tapteal Greenway Association and Richland Parks to help clean up Bateman Island at Columbia Park in Richland. They also installed new signs and posts reminding people to pick up after their animals and also give tips on how to keep the area clean.

Tapteal Greenway Association President Scott Woodward said he wasn't expecting this many people to show up. "In these types of things there's some really bad days and you wonder if you're getting anywhere. Then something like this happens and you get energized again that so many people truly do care about Bateman Island and about keeping it clean and respecting the property," said Woodward.

Last year clean-up crews said they found several dead animals tied up in garbage plastics. They want to keep the parks clean to avoid these kind of accidents.
