Safety is on the minds of law enforcement on Super Bowl Sunday
YAKIMA, Wash.-- With a lot of people out drinking, and enjoying the Super Bowl, there's bound to be some problems. But local law enforcement hopes people will be responsible and stay safe.
According the Washington State Patrol, Yakima County has seen some pretty modest numbers associated with drunk driving.
In 2011 there were only 3 DUI arrests on Super Bowl Sunday.
Law enforcement says that's pretty good for day like that, when people are at parties, and out at local bars and restaurants.
But there's still a danger for people out and about.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 40% of all traffic fatalities during Super Bowl 2010 were a direct result of impaired drivers.
"Enjoy the game. And if you chose to use alcohol then be smart about it and get a sober driver to get you back to wherever you're going," said Sgt. Tim Bardwell with the Yakima Police Dept.
Sgt. Bardwell says things tend to be pretty calm throughout the day in Yakima, but once people finish up at parties and bars there are bound to be some calls.
If you're hosting a party of your own The Northwest Insurance Council reminds you that you're responsible for your guests. Even after they leave, you could be liable if something happens. So always be responsible.
