City Council votes tomorrow on settlement with crash victim

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- The Yakima City Council will vote tomorrow on reaching a settlement with Juan Hernandez Ortega.

Ortega is the survivor of a 2006 crash with a car chased by police. The other two men with him, Bobby Aguillar and Edgar Mendoza, were killed in the crash.

Police were chasing Blake Young who had stolen a car. Young was racing through the city streets at 80 miles an hour and ran the light at 48th and Nob Hill, crashing into Ortega's car. Young was later sentenced to 36 years in prison.

Families of the victims filed a lawsuit, saying if the car chase hadn't continued and if they hadn't been moving so fast, the two men might not have died. Ortega's is the last of the lawsuits to be settled. He's expected to get $350,000 in the settlement.
