BENTON CITY, Wash. -

More dogs found alive after a house fire in Benton City. The fire happened Saturday on the block of 251 Private Road. Early Monday morning people walking by the house heard some dogs barking, so they went to check it out and found 4 small puppies hiding under a bed. That's five dogs that have been rescued so far.

The animals were returned to the owner and taken to Columbia Veterinary Clinic in Pasco to get checked for injuries. We're told the dogs are going to be okay, but some people were worried about the timeliness of the dogs getting out of the home that burned. The owner Linda Brown said if the dogs were rescued earlier, more could have possibly survived. "Maybe if somebody had been able to get in there they could have gotten them out. There was a bunch that were in my bedroom," said Brown.

Firefighters confirmed 12 dogs were dead on Saturday afternoon. They told us other dogs could have survived and could have been hiding or run off the property. People wondered why no one went back in to get the dogs. We're told it's because the structure of the house was weak and too dangerous for re-entry.

Now the investigation has been turned over to Benton County Deputies. Benton County Detective Lee Cantu said the structure was not safe for anyone to go in. "We'll try to determine when the fire may have started what have caused the fire and until obviously that is done the residence is hopefully secure so nobody can come back into it. "

Investigators have still not determined the cause of the blaze. With the investigation still pending the homeowner says insurance may not cover the damage from the fire.

Donations for rescued dogs can be made here http://www.petfinder.com/shelters/WA368.html
for the Forgotten Dogs Rescue in Walla Walla. They are helping pay the vet bill for the dogs that have been found.
