Franklin Co. Public Works employee fired

Posted: Updated:

PASCO, Wash. - The Franklin County Public Works Accountant accused of stealing a million dollars in taxpayer money has been fired.

Franklin County Commissioners met again in executive session this morning to discuss the situation surrounding Public Works Accountant Dennis Huston.

The Commissioners unanimously decided to fire Huston for misconduct even though charges have not been filed against him.

Franklin County Prosecutors were also there and said the termination is legal based on the circumstances.

From here, three investigations continue. Criminal investigations of Huston will be handled by the Attorney General's Office, and Franklin County is holding an internal investigation along with the State Auditors office taking an outside look.

Brad Peck, the Franklin County Commissioner, said, "we're not investigating people, we're investigating our processes and procedures to make sure that appropriate checks and balances are in place so something like this can't happen again."

The commissioners still don't know when the eight workers placed on paid leave will be returning to work. Officials say the only reason the workers are gone is to allow the investigation to be handled efficiently and effectively.
