Deputies continue search for Wapato murder suspect
WAPATO, Wash. -- Detectives with the Yakima County Sheriff's Office continue their investigation into last week's homicide.
Deputies say Audelino Mendez, 36, was shot in the abdomen at a house on the 6200 block of Lateral "B" Road on February 2. Investigators say Mendez was able to get into his car to drive to the hospital, but crashed into ditch. He later died at a hospital.
According to Chief of Detectives Stewart Graham, the shooting does not appear to be a random act of violence.
"This is probably going to end up looking like the victim and the suspect knew each other. And there was something going on between the two of them that led to the shooting," explained Chief Graham.
Graham says it's unclear whether Mendez was living at the home where the incident took place, but Mendez did use the address in the past as his residence. The occupants of the home were not related to the victim, according to Graham.
Detectives believe the shooting is not gang related. They are still looking for suspects and a motive for the shooting.
