Reserve funds used to pay for snow removal in January

Posted: Updated:

YAKIMA, Wash.-- Last months snow storm was bigger than expected for the City of Yakima.

The cost for all that work? $415,000.

That's $15,000 more than what's in the entire snow removal budget for 2012.

Officials say the price went way up when they had to call in contractors to help with removal on neighborhood streets.

"Big storm, and when you got to bring in a lot of extra people and equipment it's going to cost a lot more money to take care of it," said Joe Rosenlund, streets and traffic manager.

Rosenlund says his department had to take money out of their reserve fund to cover the cost last month.

Now they're worried about next winter because if there's another big storm this year they'll have to go straight back to the reserve fund to pay for it.
