SEATTLE (AP) - The 8-year-old Bremerton girl who was wounded in a school shooting is now breathing on her own, but she remains in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
A spokesperson says she was taken off a respirator Wednesday and is now being weaned off sedatives. Unless there's a setback, the next step would be for her to move out of the intensive care unit.
The 8 year old has had five surgeries since the Feb. 22 shooting. No more surgery is currently planned, although the bullet is still in her body.
The hospital spokeswoman says sometimes it's riskier to remove a bullet if it's in a sensitive area, such as near the spinal cord.
The 9-year-old boy who took the gun to school in his backpack was sentenced Tuesday to a year's probation.
