Washington Governor signs new law regarding teacher evaluations

Posted: Updated:

Wash. - Washington Governor Gregoire signed a new law into effect Thursday that adds improvement in student test scores to how teachers are evaluated, and teacher feedback into how principals are evaluated.

The law builds on the four-level rating system the State Legislature established two years ago, but now, the state will offer evaluation templates for school districts to choose from rather than having local teachers and administrators come up with their own.

The law will also change which factors are considered when teacher lay-offs are announced. Washington state has previously focused mostly on seniority, but will now include teacher evaluations when it comes to lay-offs.
